Content Calendar Basics

This plan helps small music store owners create and manage simple, effective content by showing what to post, when to post, and how to measure success. It keeps your marketing on track, engages customers, and helps attract more people to your store.
Disclaimer: You don’t need to start posting on all platforms right away. It can take time to learn how to post, come up with ideas, and feel comfortable. If posting on every platform feels like too much, start with one platform. Once you feel good about it, you can add another platform. Over time, you’ll be posting more often and reaching more customers

‍

Step 1: Pick Goals

What to Think About:

  • What do you want your posts to do?
  • Do you want more people to visit your store, buy something, or sign up for lessons?

Questions to Ask:

  • Are we talking about our instruments, lessons, or music events?
  • Which platforms are the most important?

Example Goal: "Get 15% more likes on Instagram and have 50 people sign up for guitar lessons through Facebook."

How to Use This: Write clear goals so you can see if your posts are helping you grow your music store.

‍

Step 2: Know Your Customers

What to Think About:

  • Who are your customers? Are they kids, parents, or musicians?
  • What do they like about your store or lessons?

Questions to Ask:

  • Are your customers looking for fun, helpful, or inspiring posts?
  • What kinds of posts do they comment on or share?

Example Customers: "Parents looking for music lessons for their kids and local musicians looking for new instruments."

How to Use This: Make posts that match what your customers like and need.

‍

Step 3: How Often to Post

What to Think About:

  • How many posts should you make on each platform?
  • What kinds of posts work best for your music store?

Posting Tips:

  • Facebook: 3-5 posts a week
  • Instagram: 3-5 posts a week, plus 2 Stories a day
  • LinkedIn: 1-2 posts per work day
  • Twitter: 2-3 tweets a day
  • TikTok: 3-5 posts a week
  • YouTube: 1-2 videos a week

How to Use This: Post enough to stay in front of your customers without overwhelming them.

‍

Step 4: Pick Themes for Posts

What to Think About:

  • What ideas will your customers like?
  • Can you share helpful tips, fun facts, or news about your store?

Examples of Themes:

  • Motivational Monday: "Start the week strong with an inspiring music quote."
  • Helpful Tips: "How to care for your guitar strings."
  • Fun Friday: "Share a funny story about learning an instrument."
  • YouTube Video Ideas: "Top 5 Beginner Tips for Learning Guitar" or "Behind-the-Scenes Tour of Our Music Store."

How to Use This: Plan themes for each day to make posts fun and easy to create.

‍

Step 5: Make the Plan

What to Think About:

  • When should you post to get the most likes and comments?
  • What kind of post works best for each theme?

Example Week (Jan 1-7):

  • Monday: Motivational Quote (Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn)
    • "Music gives a soul to the universe and life to everything." – Plato
  • Wednesday: Fun Fact Infographic (Facebook, Twitter)
    • "Did you know? The piano was invented over 300 years ago!"
  • Friday: Customer Story (Facebook, Instagram)
    • "Meet Sarah! She just bought her first violin from us and loves it."
  • Saturday: YouTube Video (YouTube, Facebook)
    • "How to Tune Your Guitar in 5 Minutes."

How to Use This: Use a plan to stay organized and post regularly.

‍

Step 6: Make and Write Posts

What to Think About:

  • Are your pictures and videos fun and clear?
  • Do your captions make people want to comment or share?

Questions to Ask:

  • Are pictures and videos bright and colorful?
  • Do captions ask questions or invite customers to your store?

Example Post:

  • Picture: A photo of a shiny new guitar in your store
  • Caption: "Looking for your next favorite instrument? Come see our newest guitars! Which one is your favorite? ✨ #MusicStoreLove"
  • YouTube Example: "Video Title: Beginner Keyboard Tips – Learn Your First Song!"
    • "Description: Want to start playing the keyboard? This video shows you an easy song to try. Visit our store to find the perfect beginner keyboard!"

How to Use This: Use simple templates for common posts to save time and keep your posts looking nice.

‍

Step 7: Check and Fix

What to Think About:

  • How will you know if your posts are working?
  • What can you do better next time?

Questions to Ask:

  • Which posts got the most likes and shares?
  • Are people clicking links to your store or lessons?
  • How many views did your YouTube videos get?

Example Check: "Count how many people clicked on lesson sign-up links, liked your posts about new instruments, or watched your YouTube videos."

How to Use This: Look at your results and try new ideas to make your posts even better.

‍

Next Steps

How to Get Better:

  • Try new ideas, like live videos of lessons or staff favorites.
  • Partner with local schools or musicians to share your posts.
  • Post customer reviews or photos to show your store’s success.
  • Create more YouTube videos showing tips, tutorials, or store updates.

Check Often:

  • Look at your plan every week to stay on track.
  • Ask: "Are our posts bringing in more customers?"
